Ebooks at the Julien & Virginia Cornell Library : Ebook Central download options (overview)

This guide will help you find, access and download ebooks available in the library.

Ebook Central downloading options

All of the ebooks in JULIEN can be read in a browser online.  Ebook Central ebooks can also be downloaded to your pc, laptop, or a variety of mobile devices. You can search for Ebook Central titles on the Vermont Law and Graduate School Ebook Central site or in JULIEN, our library's online catalog.

USING THE ONLINE READER: Browser-based, and "checks out" the title for just your browser session. This is a good way to identify chapters/sections that you wish to download. Please click here for a short video tutorial on the online reader and "bookshelf."

DOWNLOADING EBOOK CENTRAL EBOOKS:

  1. Option one: Create an image PDF of a specific chapter or page range
  2. Option two: Download an entire document as an e-book (to your pc/laptop or your mobile device)

Which option should I pick???

Downloading a chapter or page range via option one is a good choice if you:

  • want to be able to keep the content in perpetuity -- chapter downloads do not expire.
  • have a Kindle.  Full downloads are not currently available for the Kindle device

Downloading the entire document is a good option if you:

  • need to read it offline; just know that the content you've downloaded will expire and disappear from your device in 3 days.

Please note that when you "download" a title, that title becomes unavailable to other users for the full, 3 day download period. If you read a book in the online reader, the book immediately becomes available to the next person when you close your browser session.

Ebook Central downloading FAQs

What is the difference between saving a title to the Ebook Central bookshelf and using the “download” option?

An Ebook Central document downloaded as an e-book in its entirety in Adobe Digital Editions is only available to you on a temporary basis, whereas titles saved to your Ebook Central bookshelf do not expire (although if someone else has that title downloaded, you will have to wait for them to return it before you can access it). Chapters or sections downloaded in PDF format are available to you in perpetuity. Please note that when you "download" a title, that title becomes unavailable to other users for the full, 3 day download period. If you read a book in the online reader, the book immediately becomes available to the next person when you close your browser session.

What is the “check out” period for the full download?

3 days. Ebook Central documents downloaded with Adobe Digital Editions automatically expire at the end of the loan period and are rendered unusable at that time.

How many titles can I “check out” and download to my device at one time?

You can download a maximum of 10 complete documents at a time. You might want to return unwanted books early so you can download others. When you return a downloaded document, it may take up to 10 minutes for the return to be processed before you may download another one.

Can I download a book to my Kindle?

Currently, you can only download a chapter of a book to your Kindle, by selecting the “chapter download” option.

Can I download a book to my iPad or iPhone?  How about my Android device?
Yes. You will need to download the Bluefire Reader app (freely available for iOS devices in the App Store and for Android devices in Google Play). After downloading the app, you need to authorize your device using your Adobe account to access your materials. Which devices are supported by Adobe Digital Editions?

Why can’t I download some e-books?

Some documents are provided by a publisher which does not allow full-document downloading. Instead, you could choose to save a portion of chapters of the book into PDF. You’ll have permanent access to these documents. You can also read the ebook in it's entirety by choosing the "Read Online" option.

I downloaded an e-book but didn’t open it immediately with Adobe Digital Editions. How do I find the file?
