Court Docket Materials

This guide provides information about how to access court dockets at the federal, state, and local levels.

Introduction

Lady JusticeCourt docket materials are materials that were filed with or by a court in relation to a case pending before that court. They include legal briefs, exhibits, and court orders. These materials are not published and sometimes have to be obtained from the courts themselves. Federal docket materials are available from an online service called PACER, but PACER charges for that access. Many state and local (county, city, etc.) courts also charge for access. Alternative resources are slowly becoming available, but you sometimes will still need to go through the relevant court to access its materials. Use the tabs on the left to learn about search options that are currently available.

Please note this guide does not address online materials other than those that are available for free or through VLGS subscriptions.
