Energy Law and Policy Research: Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law


For effective energy law research,  you can do one of the following: 

Search for sources as you normally would, including using the Advanced Search option.


Click on Practice Areas and then on  Energy & Environment for an energy  or an environmental focus.


Type <energy> into the main search box and note options in the drop down box.

By clicking on Help you can access text or video tutorials. Although none of the tutorials deal specifically with Energy Law, they can be helpful generally when using WestlawNext.



Lexis Advance

For effective energy law research,  you can do one of the following:

Search as you normally would. 


Select Energy & Utilities Law, under Practice Areas & Topics for a more energy-focused search.


Browse (top left)  to Topics for Sub-topics.  Ex., under the Topic Energy & Utilities Law, are sub-topics such as Electric Power Industry, Energy Conservation, Hydroelectric Power Industry,  OIl & Mineral Interests, Pipelines & Transportation, Regulators, Taxation Issues, etc. Select the sub-topic as a search filter and enter a search query.

The Help button and Support folder on the main page link to tutorials, etc.  Although none deal specifically with Energy Law, they can be helpful when using Lexis Advance.



Bloomberg Law

For effective environmental law research,  you can do one of the following:

Search as you normally would. 


Select  the Practice area:  Environmental & Safety. There is no specific Energy Practice area. 


Enter a search query as you normally would, select a content type (ex., Court Opinions) and limit your results using Topic filters (such as energy law, administrative law, environmental law, alternative dispute resolution, etc.). NOTE: Not all content types have topical filters.

Use the BNA Law Reports which are listed on the Bloomberg Law  home page under Getting Started. Choose Environment for a list of environmental Reports, several of which will be helpful for energy law and policy research including  Energy & Climate Report.
